>> good morning, everyone. it's 6:00 a.m. and i'm katie marzullo. we will start off with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. the first weekend of the new year and we are looking at the same old weather pattern unfortunately for today. we are talking about temperatures chilly in the 30s. we do have some fog around the golden gate bridge. by 9:00 it should be lifting. the numbers coming up out of the 30s and 40s by noontime we are looking at 50s and 60s. perhaps a few records around the bay in parts where we will see

numbers from 10 do 15 degrees above average. it's a spare-the-air day and offshore flow keeping us mild today. but changes do occur by the beginning of the work week. we will talk about the possibility of a few raindrops, whether or not we will see those coming up in a few minutes. katie. >> thank you. developing news out of antioch where an amber alert has been canceled. the girl has been found safe and her suspected kidnapper is in police custody. the 7-year-old is pack with her parents. someone recognized the car that led to her rescue. david douglas was arrested. they earlier identified him as a person of interest in the girl's ab drugs. the girl was taken from her mother at gunpoint in front. their home at hummingbird drive 6:45 last night. douglas allegedly followed them home from a wal-mart store. they were unloading groceries when the man grabbed the girl, pointed the gun at her mother and dragged nationally to his car. later a pittsburgh woman at the

antioch marty reasonerra saw a shirt less man in the back of a gold toyota with someone. she knew about the amber alert and passed down a very fortunate passing car. >> i went to my car to honk honk the corn and the guy jumped out and he was a undercover police officer. >> we had a similar incident yesterday at the wal-mart where a mother was with her daughter and this individual, who has been i. d.as the person we have in custody, approached her daughter, and also approached her and noted he worked for social services and asked the daughter to come with him. >> the chief said that prior incident on thursday, the attempted abduction was not reported until sometime friday. antioch police know douglas from previous encounters but say is he not a registered sex offender.

>> the flu is being blamed for the death of a santa clara county woman in her early 40s. the first flu death this season and why health officials are so alarmed. >> the cold and flu medicine has been flying off the shelves at this san jose cvs store. she just got over the flu. >> i don't really want to describe it. >> it was bad? >> yeah. >> santa clara county health official believe the flu season is just getting started. and the death of a 41-year-old woman along with a hospitalization of seven others here is raising red flags. >> both the woman that died, as well as the cases that have been in icu, they have all been people in their 40s, 50s. you know, fairly young, young people. >> reporter: the dominant strain so far this season is the h1n1 virus. also known as the swine flu, the

one responsible for the woman's death on november 23rd. the centers for disease control said it hits the young and middle age harder then older people who may have developed some immunity after facing a similar strain in the 1940s and 50ths. >> it's a cause of concern and we are urging many people to be vaccinated. >> reporter: but many question the effectiveness. >> some years we take it and get sick anyway, and other years we don't take it and the opposite. >> still health officials say it can reduce your chances of getting the virus by 50 to 70%. in san jose, alan wang, abc7 news. 25 states seen here in red on the map are reporting widespread flu activity last week. that's up from just 10 states the week before. the states in orange, including california, have significant flu activity, but only in part of the state. experts say so far it's been a typical flu season but h1n1 is the most common strain of the flu. a new court ruling clears the way for a family of jahi mcmath to move the girl who

has been declared brain dead, out of oakland. >> it's for my daughter. they love their children as much as i love mine. >> the fit went back to court and an alameda county court judge said they can remove her from the ventilator on tuesday at 5:00 p.m. but the family is fighting to move her before then to another facility that will continue medical care. >> i know now the court is making it known that the parents do have rights. >> reporter: a 7 1/2 hour long settlement conference took place before the hearing. >> we will bring our own ventilator in. and jahi will exit the facility. >> the two procedures need for jahi to be transferred or a tracheotomy and feeding tube

insertion will not be done at children's and he isn't saying when and where they are moving her, only this it would be as soon as possible. a superior court judge okayed the move as long as the mother assumes all responsibility for what happens during the transfer. jahi had surgery on december 9th for a routine tonsillectomy. placed on a ventilator and on a ventilator and on december 11th she was declared brain dead. the two sides reached their decision earlier in the day. >> by the terms of this stipulation, there's the possibility for jahi mcmath to leave the hospital. >> the family may ask for a extension if jahi hasn't been moved. nick smyth, abc7 news. >> at least 16 people have been killed in a deadly winter storm pounding the midwest and east coast. it's dumped up to two feet of snow in some areas and brought subzero temperatures.

forecasters say bone-chilling temperatures will return tomorrow in the midwest where a polar vortex is expected to begin turning cold air in a wide area. according to flight aware.com, it also grounded 3500 flights in the u.s. yesterday and delayed 7,000 more. in the bay area, there were dozens of cancellations. at sfo, twelve departures and 14 arrivals were cancelled at oakland international. 8 flights canceled at san jose and another eight flights. we have more from sfo where niner fans are trying to make it a green bay for the game. >> milton and his friend, keith, are fearlessly heading into the bone-chilling cold hitting the mid-quest. >> i'm from california so i don't know what to expect. i'll find out soon. >> they are diehard 49er fans so neither sleet nor snow nor flight delays will keep them

from cheering on their team. >> it's going to be pretty cold. they are saying it might be the coldest football game ever. >> as people in the midwest and east coast dugout of snowstorms, flight delays and cancellations heading in and out backed up. some flights were delayed because planes were available but the crews were stuck at other airports or the other way around. this is the line of passengers looking to get rebooked from flights that were cancelled or severely delayed because of weather. kaitlin and bobby are heading into the cold in new york. they aren't sure how they will get home from the airport. >> dad is supposed to come and get us, but he's from upstate new york so he doesn't want to take the truck. >> they have plenty of warm ski clothes, unlike this 49er fan who said he's packing light for the trip to green bay. >> is this what you are going to survive through over there? >> well, i feel good. if my team can have less than me

i will which are when they wear >> he said he will buy warmer clothes once he gets there, if he needs them. at san francisco international airport, abc7 news. >> happening today. activists will be rebuilding a memorial at a spot in santa rosa with 13-year-old andy lopez was shot and killed by deputies. the original memorial burned down wednesday night. some believe it was torched on purpose but fire officials determined a candle started the fire. at 11:00 volunteers will gather to rebuild the shrine, vowing to make it better than before. lopez was shot and killed by a sonoma county sheriff's deputy on october 22nd while holding a toy gun designed to look like an ak-47 assault police are investigating an accident that killed one person and left another in critical condition. a 67-year-old woman died at the scene. it happened yesterday afternoon as they crossed heatherton street near third.

both had the green light but one should have yielded. the truck driver said he did not see the people. drugs and alcohol are not believed to be to be involved in the accident >> police of investigating a shooting yesterday afternoon. they were over capehorn drive not much after the shooting which was about 3:30 in the afternoon. san jose police responded to two men in their 30s fighting and arrived to find one had a knife. officers asked the man to drop it. when he refused and came toward her, she shot him. the suspect's wounds are not to be life-threatening. the incident is the first officer-involved shooting for san jose this year. police want your help identifying a burglar. he was caught on surveillance cameras at this housing complex. police say the man in this photo entered one of the apartments on nelson riding lane yesterday. he left when a tenant there confronted him. witnesses say they saw the same man rattling door handles

earlier. if you recognize him you are asked to call the police department. atu union members have approved a tentative agreement with bart that ends months of heated negotiations. they approved the deal thursday. it dropped the controversial clause granting union members up to six weeks of paid family medical leave this bart said was mistakenly included. they will vote on the contract on the 13th. >> kind a damp morning out there. >> yeah. fog across the bay and oakland as well with an eight-mile visibility. here's a look from the emeryville camera where it is 42 degrees in the city. we are looking at low 30s in the north bay. certainly chilly and fog extends up around the by. we will talk about that. and the ridge of high pressure, will it get out of here? that when we return. >> thank you. also next, state officials are calling it abysmal, the results of the snow survey. and what if can mean for the

the los angeles start-up founded by him. they claimed typo copied the smartphone maker's iconic keyboard. another sign that california could be headed for a major drought. this is the first snowpack survey of the year, and it's the lowest on record. just 20% of normal. that ties 2012 for the lowest on record for early january. >> it just reflects the fact that we've had minimal storm activity this year. you know, we get that high pressure center building up over in the pacific northwest, shifting all the storms up into canada, and then subsequently on to the east coast. there's just no water right here. >> the officials estimate they will only be able to deliver 5% of the water requested by public agencies this year. the winter snowpack provides about a third of the state's water supply. >> the unseasonably warm weather

january 2nd they set a record for peak production. >> it's largely a function of dramatically increased solar capacity in california but who would have thought we would mark a milestone like this just after new year's day. >> july, 2012 we were celebrating the turnover to 1,000-watt in solar and now we've tripled that in 18 months. >> although california needs normal winter weather, at least solar is picking up some of the load for hydropower that's just not happening right now. in sacramento, george warren, abc7 news. >> sounds like for people with solar panels, more good news this weekend. >> yes. yesterday we tied a record in southeast tahoe, 58 degrees. that was the record tied last year in 2012. we definitely had a string of dry days for the past couple

weeks. it continues throughout the day today. i should say the weekend. but changes could be coming on monday and tuesday. live doppler 7hd showing low clouds and high clouds this morning to talk about. acrosses by in oakland visibility has been reduced to an eighth of a mile. and it's clear in the north bay and temperatures are really chilly. continue to drop to just around freezing in the north by. from the sutro, no visibility problems here. mid-40s and the coast in mid-40s with upper 30s on the peninsula, 41 los gatos and san jose at 42. the room camera, mice and calm. no wind. upper elevations become breezy as the offshore winds kick up. for the short term it's freezing in santa rosa and and novato with 34 napa, 35 by the delta and 37 from concord and livermore. so from our exploratorium come raw, another shot of the city

where we are looking at that sun coming up at 7:25. chilly throughout the morning hours with that coastal fog. another spare the air day today. and cooler next week with the possibility of a few sprinkles coming our way into tuesday and tuesday night. so the air quality, santa clara valley will be poor. medium around the bay. 27th alert since november 1st and that makes it the fifth consecutive spare the air day. the high pressure is building to the east of us and the storm track continues to be shunted well to the north. that allows for mainly dry and mild weather this week. but there is a system that will slide to the east and drop to the south as high pressure gives way and that will give us our only opportunity of maybe some light showers. taking you into the upper midwest where, boy, they have been experiencing some of the coldest air they have seen in a long time. perhaps 20 or 30 years. so for the game tomorrow for the

niners, that means sub-freezing weather. but today across the midwest it's freezing in chicago with minneapolis at 22 below and look what happens in the west. phoenix and portland chilly at 47. temperatures tomorrow ranging from 1 above to 4 below for the game and that windchill anywhere from 25 to 35 degrees below zero and the winds kicking up to 15 miles an hour. that gives you the wind-chill factor. for the highs today back home, upper 60s will be coming from fremont, san jose and up in the north bay maybe 70 in cloverdale. 65 half moon bay. we have the fog this morning and spare the air day today a few degrees cooler tomorrow. increasing clouds on monday. slight chance of showers tuesday, tuesday night partly cloudy and more sunshine with mild weather thursday and friday. abc7 news has another great weather resource for you to follow. that's following live doppler 7hd for the latest weather

>> welcome back, everyone. we are coming up on 6:30 and starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. we are starting out with freezing temperatures in the north bay. novato 32 degrees. 38 in the san ramon valley and 39 in oakland. but visibility is a problem. more moisture in the air this morning allowing for just a quarter mile visibility over in oakland. a mile and a quarter half moon by, as well as novato. and the airport at three quarters of a mile. so we are looking at temperatures today to once again return to mild readings. but it is another spare the air day today. so the poor air quality in the santa clara valley and changes for the first part of the week. >> lisa, thank you. >> developing news out of antioch. an abducted girl is safe and a suspect is being questioned by

police. 7-year-old natalie calvo is back with her parents. somebody recognized the car. police recognized david douglas. they are not revealing what charges he faces, but they earlier identified him as a person of interest in the girl's abduction. she was taken from her mother at gunpoint in front of their home around 6:45 last night. douglas followed them home from a walmart store. they were unloading groceries when he grabbed the girl, point add gun at the mother and dragged natalie to his car. later a pittsburgh mother saw a shirtless man in back of a toyota with someone, new about the amber alert and flagged down the passing car. >> i look and saw the car passing by so i flagged another car down. and luckily the car that stopped was the police. >> he's currently in custody and going through interrogation at this point. natalie is currently being reunited with her family. this investigation is obviously in the very early stages.

>> police identified douglas as a person of interest in this case after a similar incident at the same walmart store on thursday night. police said he posed as a social worker and tried to take another woman's daughter but was scared off. police had previous encounters with him but is not a registered sex offender. tonight president obama and the first family will return from their holiday vacation in hawaii. in his weekly address he urges congress to replace the unemployment benefits that more than 1 million americans lost a last weekend and congress allowed the benefits to expire. the president wants both parties to approve a three-month extension that's already under consideration in the senate. >> when congress comes back to work this week, their first order of business should be making this right. right now a bipartisan group in congress is working on a three-month extension of unemployment insurance. if they pass it, i will sign it. >> on the republican side, congressman greg harper of mississippi encouraged support for a healthcare initiative. the kids first research act.

it's other bipartisan bill that redirects political convention funds to pay for pediatric research at the nation's institutes for health. happening today a new baseball helmet to better protect pitchers from being hit by line drives gets an endorsement from someone who knows how important that is. gunner sandberg was pitching in a high school baseball game when he took a shot to the head in 2010. he was hospitalized with life-threatening head injuries. today he will speak to parents and others about the halo, the new headgear for baseball players is made with military grade composite material used for body armor. it's makers say it reduces the impact by 50%. >> happening today, a princess cruiseliner arrives in san francisco to kick off the 2014 west coast cruise season. it's scheduled to arrive at the cruise terminal at 7:00 this morning from mexico. it will be the first of 76 cruise ships to be here this year. shy of the record of 85. port officials say the ships bring in major tourism dollars

central valley concerned about their crops. winters in the valley are usually cool and wet, a times for crops to go dormant, but not right now. after dealing with a freeze last month temperatures are in the 60s and the ground is so dry farmers are forced to irrigate their crops one or two months ahead of schedule. >> every morning i wake up and check the forecast for rain and keep hoping and praying for it. >> farmers are also concerned the warm weather could fuel diseases and things to destroy the crops. the family room bureau said the warm weather and conditions could have a major economic effect on the region. coming up next, the san francisco startup with the unusual goal. how it's using crowd funding to build the first indoor miniature golf course. >> and a live look at the

>> this morning the owner of a florida animal sanctuary is facing misdemeanor charges after a lion dug out and escaped. the seven-year-old female lion has been caught and will be returned to a cage that's been thoroughly inspected and secured. the escape happened near tampa. the lion was found inside a ten-foot-high perimeter fence. federal officials said they told the answer area to repair the

lionen closure last february to prevent an escape. >> officials say the car that fast and fur russ actor paul walker was driving in may have been going over is 1100 miles an hour. they said no alcohol or drugs were detected in the stem of either man. the november 30th deaths have been ruled accidental. a big detour next week for drivers who commute to the bay area from the fosston area. highway 160 is going to be closed at night all next week. it connects highways 12 and 4. it will be off-limits from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. from january 6 until january 10th. the three mile bridge is getting a much-needed face-lift. work will be done to the roadway and the control house. caltran said the detour will force some commuters to drive as much as 80 miles to reach third -- their destination. there will be signs up alerting motorists of the closers and detours. san jose's historic landmark commission meets next week to consider nominating the theater

energy will stay north of the bay area. and the reason being, high pressure does not want to give way. in fact, the offshore flow today, allowing for breezy winds, santa ana winds in southern california and the offshore winds continue to keep our area mild with above normal temperatures. tuesday notice you could see a few light raindrops in the northern mountains. and redding, we could see cooler conditions that will allow for better snow making but in terms of accumulated precip, right on through the week ahead we are looking at getting awfully close, but really only less than a tenth of an inch of rain if we do see any precip at all. in terms of the snowpack, that doesn't bode well because we are only at 10% of normal for the northern sierra. central sierra 21%. doing better in the southern sierra. but a year ago, boy, we had a lot of rain and snow. so we are suffering this year underneath hazy sunshine.
